第2回目は、前回に引き続きまして、その後の高安城についてご紹介致します。

前回は唐・新羅の連合軍に倭国・百済復興軍が大敗し、存亡の危機が迫っている中、
天智天皇が都の大和国を守る最後の砦として高安城を築いたという流れで説明いたしましたが、
第2回目の『壬申の乱勃発！その時、高安城は…』では、その後どうなったかについて解説します。

天智天皇が危惧していた唐・新羅連合軍が日本に攻めて来なかったため、高安城は何事もなく出番を終えたのかといえばそうではなく、次なる戦いにおいて高安城が再び表舞台に出るのです。

決戦、壬申の乱の勃発！（大友皇子vs大海人皇子）

天智天皇は、晩年になって近江大津宮（現在の滋賀県）に遷都し、行政機構の整備などを行いました。
後継は第一皇子である大友皇子になるはずだったのですが、ここで待ったをかけた人物がいます。
大海人皇子（天智天皇の弟）です。最初の後継は大海人皇子でしたが、天智天皇は晩年になって、自身の嫡子に継がせたいと思うようになり、後継人を大友皇子にして自身の弟である大海人皇子を疎むようになっていたのです。

His successor was supposed to be succeeded by his first prince, Prince Otomo, but there is a person who waited here.
He is the Prince of the Sea (the younger brother of Emperor Tenji). His first successor was the Prince of the Sea, but in his later years Emperor Tenji began to want his son to take over, and he began to dislike his younger brother.

天智天皇が病に臥せた際には、大海人皇子は身の危険を感じ、剃髪して奈良の山奥『吉野』へ去りました。そして、672年に天智天皇が崩御し、大友皇子が天皇に即位する準備を進めていました。
機が熟すのを待っていた大海人皇子はすぐさま挙兵を決意し、吉野を脱出して軍勢を集め、不破関（現在の岐阜県不破郡関ヶ原町）をいち早く封鎖させ、信濃や尾張、美濃といった東国の軍勢を総動員させることに成功。一気に近江へ攻め込み、大友皇子を自害へと追い込みました。端的に説明しましたが、この一連の戦いが『壬申の乱』です。

He attacked Omi and forced Prince Otomo into suicide.

この戦いの際、前の都である大和国にある高安城でも壮絶な戦いが繰り広げられました。
高安城は、大友皇子側である近江朝廷軍の城となっていましたが、大海人皇子が優勢だったこともあり、大海人皇子軍に攻められた際に近江朝廷軍は税倉を焼いて逃亡したとのことです。天智天皇が国防のために築いた高安城は、あろうことか自身の弟である大海人皇子に落されてしまったのです。

Takayasu Castle was the castle of the Omi Imperial Court Army on the side of Prince Otomo, but because the Prince of the Sea was dominant, the Omi Imperial Court Army burned the tax warehouse and escaped when attacked. That is.
Takayasu Castle, which Emperor Tenji built for national defense, was probably dropped by his younger brother, Prince Omi.

このように、古代史最大の大乱である壬申の乱においても登場した高安城ですが、両軍の激戦となったことからも読み取れるように非常に重要な拠点であったことは間違いありません。仮に、唐・新羅の連合軍が攻めて来ていたとしたらどうなっていたのでしょうか。
歴史に「IF」は考えがちでありますが、自分なりに考えて当時を想像することも歴史の醍醐味の一つではないでしょうか。今回は全２回に分けて高安城を紹介しましたが、次回は壬申の乱の深掘りをしていきたいと思います。
