今回は、鳥取県米子市にある『米子城』をご紹介させていただきます。
米子は、鳥取県内第2位の都市で、有名な皆生温泉などがあります。
This time, I would like to introduce “Yonago Castle” in Yonago City, Tottori Prefecture.
Yonago is the second largest city in Tottori prefecture and has the famous Kaike Onsen.

その前に、せっかくですので『鳥取県』の魅力をご紹介いたします。

鳥取県は、県下で最大都市の鳥取市をはじめ、2番目の都市・米子市、そして中央に位置する第3の都市・倉吉市と拠点の市が分散していることで有名です。（西の米子・中央の倉吉・東の鳥取）

元々、旧国名の『伯耆国』と『因幡国』が合わさってできた県で、伯耆国の中では「東伯耆」と「西伯耆」に分けることができます。

大まかに説明すると、因幡国は、No.1のまち「鳥取」、東伯耆の「倉吉」、西伯耆の「米子」といったイメージです。これを知っているだけで、鳥取県に詳しい方という印象を持ちます。

また、鳥取は『まんが王国』としても有名で、ゲゲゲの鬼太郎の水木しげる氏（境港市）や名探偵コナン作者の青山剛昌（あおやまごうしょう）氏（北栄町）、遥かな町へ・父の暦の谷口ジロー氏（鳥取市）のご出身の地でもあります。日本を代表する作品がこれだけ鳥取から生まれているのは驚きですよね！！

鳥取の魅力を存分にお伝えしたところで、本題の米子城を説明させていただきます。

余談ですが、皆さまはこの「米子」という漢字なんか不思議って感じませんでしたか？
なんか可愛いというか、米の子？ってどう言う意味なんだろうって筆者は思いました（笑）

米子の由来ですが、4個ほどあるそうで、以下にその説を載せていただきます。

①【賀茂神社の伝説】
昔、賀茂神社の近隣に住む人たちは境内の井戸で、お米を研いでいました。お米を研ぐことを「よなぐ」と言ったので、その井戸を「よなぐ井」と呼んでいました。それがいつしか変わって「よなご井」と言うようになったそうです。
そしていつしかその井戸の名をとって、この辺りの集落を「よなご」と呼ぶようになったそうです。その後、吉川元春が砦を築いた際に、「よなご」に「米子」という漢字を当てて呼ぶようにしました。それから米子という地名になったということです。

②【88歳で子どもが生まれた話】
賀茂神社の隣りに引っ越した長者さんが境内の井戸で身を清めたら、なんと８８歳で子どもができ、そこから「八十八の子」が「米の子」そして「米子」となったということです。

③【稲がよく実るから】
稲のよく実る「米生の里（よなおうのさと）」から「米生郷（よなおうのごう）」となり、そしていつしか「米子」となった。

④【地形の特徴から】
「よな（砂という意味）」＋「なご（平という意味）」
砂のたいらなところから、「よなご」になった。

さまざまな説がありますね。
筆者的には、②【88歳で子どもが生まれた話】だったとしたら、すごいなって思います。

余談すみませんでした。
そして、お待たせいたしました。
米子城の説明に入りたいと思います。

米子城は、伯耆国守護・山名六郎教之が配下の山名五郎宗幸（宗之）に応仁年間から文明年間（1467〜1487年）の間に飯山（現在の米子城がある湊山の対にある山）に砦を築かせたのが始まりと言われています。
当時の情勢から応仁の乱で東軍(細川勝元)側についた出雲国守護・京極氏に対抗するためにこの地に築いたとのことです。

応仁の乱は京都の洛中での争いという印象が強かったのですが、
代理戦争という形で全国に飛び火していたのですね。

その後、1524年に「大永の五月崩れ」により、当時の山陰の謀聖・尼子経久が大軍を率いて伯耆へ攻め込み、国内の諸城を一気に攻め崩して短期間のうちに伯耆一国が尼子領となったのです。

しかし、1562年ごろ、山陰の大大名であった二大巨頭の大内・尼子を凌ぐ勢力が現れます。
その人物こそが謀将と謳われた中国地方の覇者・毛利元就が登場し、両勢力を駆逐するのです。
国人領主に過ぎなかった元就が、中国地方全土を支配下に入れるその怒涛の勢いは、まるでマケドニアの「アレクサンドロス大王」みたいですね。
その後は、毛利配下の福頼元秀や吉川広家が城主となり、関ヶ原の戦い前までこの地を治めました。

関ヶ原の戦いで敗れた西軍総大将・毛利輝元が責任取らされ、周防・長門（現在の山口県）へ減封となったため、1600年に中村一忠（豊臣政権の三中老の一人・中村一氏の嫡男）が米子城主となりました。
それから、城主は変わったものの1871年の廃城まで、米子城は重要な拠点として機能しました。

目まぐるしく変化し続ける時代の中で、米子城は活躍し続けたのです。

However, around 1562, a force appears that surpasses the two giants, Ouchi and Amago, who were the great lords of the Sanin region.
That person is the one who appears as the champion of the Chugoku region, Motonari Motonari, who is touted as a holy conspiracy, and destroys both forces.
Motonari, who was only a national lord, took control of the entire Chugoku region, and the angry momentum is like “Alexander the Great” in Macedonia.
After that, Motohide Fukuyori and Hiroie Yoshikawa under Mori became the castle owners and ruled this land before the Battle of Sekigahara.

In Sekigahara, the Western Army General General Mori Terumoto was taken responsibility and the seal was reduced to Suo and Nagato, so in 1600 Kazutada Nakamura (one of the three middle-aged elders of the Toyotomi administration, the son of Mr. Kazuuji Nakamura) became the owner of Yonago Castle. I did.
Then, although the castle owner changed, Yonago Castle functioned as an important base of the national government until it was abandoned in 1871.

Yonago Castle continued to play an active role in an era of rapid change.
