今回ご紹介させていただきますのは、島根県安来(やすぎ)市です。
まず、安来市が島根県のどのあたりに位置するのかを確認してみましょう。

このように、安来市は島根県の東端に位置し、鳥取県第２の都市・米子市と接しています。
元々は、スサノオノミコト（素戔嗚尊）が「安来く（やすけく）地」と命名したことが市名の由来となっています。

私は、北九州市に住んでいるため、小倉駅から特急スーパーおきで約5時間、特急やくもで約4時間ほどかかります。山口県・島根県は横に長いのでどうしてもそのくらいの時間はかかってしまいますね。

そんな安来市といえば、鋼・安来節・どじょうすくい・足立美術館・月山富田城（尼子氏の居城）などが挙げられます。

まず、鋼がなぜ有名なのかというと、この地方では良質な砂鉄がよく取れ、古代から※たたら製鉄が盛んでした。そのため、日本を代表する日立グループに属する「日立金属」（当時は雲伯鉄鋼合資会社）も安来市から誕生しました。
※たたら製鉄…炉に空気を送り込むのに使われる鞴（ふいご）が「たたら」と呼ばれていたために付けられた名称であ理、砂鉄や鉄鉱石を粘土製の炉で木炭を用いて比較的低温で還元し、純度の高い鉄を生産できる手法のこと。

Speaking of such Yasugi city, there are steel, Yasugi Bushi, loach scoop, Adachi Museum of Art, Gassantoda Castle (Amago’s residence) and so on.

First of all, the reason why steel is famous is that good quality iron sand can be obtained well in this region, and * tatara ironmaking has been popular since ancient times. Therefore, “Hitachi Metals” (then Unpaku Steel Joint Stock Company), which belongs to the Hitachi Group representing Japan, was also born in Yasugi City.
※Tatara iron making: The name given to the bellows used to send air into the furnace was called “tatara”. Iron sand and iron ore are made into charcoal in a clay furnace. A method that can be used to reduce iron at a relatively low temperature to produce high-purity iron.

イーアイデムより〜たたら製鉄の仕組み〜

続いて、郷土民謡の『安来節』について、ご紹介させていただきます。
安来節は、島根県を代表する郷土民謡で、幕末から明治時代にかけて安来の地で誕生しました。

NHKの連続テレビ小説「わろてんか」にも登場した「安来節乙女組」で一躍注目をあびた島根の民謡「安来節」。大正から昭和初期にかけて全国的な大ブームになりました。

Yasugi Bushi is a folk song that represents Shimane Prefecture, and was born in Yasugi from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era.
Shimane’s folk song “Yasugi Bushi” attracted a lot of attention in the “Yasugi Bushi Otomegumi” that appeared in NHK’s serial TV novel “Warotenka”. From the Taisho era to the early Showa era, it became a big boom nationwide.

この地方では、先ほどご紹介させていただきました通り、日本有数の鉄の産地であったため、日本海に通ずる天然の良港「安来港」から、北前船で全国各地へ鉄が運ばれました。こうして江戸時代後期の安来は、鉄をはじめとする物資の交易地として大いに栄えたのです。

安来節の中でも、代表とされる「どじょうすくい踊り」。
そのはじまりは、安来の若者達がどじょうを小川から捕ってきた後に開いた酒宴にありました。

どじょうを肴に酒を呑み、酔いが回ると、どじょうを掬う時の動きを面白おかしく踊り、その場を盛り上げて楽しんだそうです。この踊りが安来節のリズムによく合い、次第に安来節の踊りとして大衆にも親しまれるようになったと言われています。

また、どじょう料理も安来市の特産で、全国屈指のどじょう養殖地でもあります。
足立美術館から徒歩5分のところに「安来節演芸館」はありますので、皆様もお立ち寄りしてみてはいかがでしょうか。

また、安来市には『足立美術館』があります。
近代日本画を中心とした島根県の登録博物館で、130点におよぶ横山大観の作品と日本庭園が有名です。

奥に見える山は、「京羅木山（きょうらぎさん）」で標高は473mで、この地域の最高峰の山とされる。【The mountain in the back is Kyoragisan, which has an altitude of 473m and is considered to be the highest mountain in the area.】

地元出身の実業家・足立全康（あだちぜんこう）氏が、71歳の時に開館したものです。
彼は、横山大観の大ファンで、「いつかお金が貯まったら、横山大観の作品を買う」という強い意気込みからコレクションを始め、ついには130点まで膨れ上がったと言われています。

It was opened by a local businessman, Zenko Adachi, when he was 71 years old.
He is a big fan of Yokoyama Taikan, and it is said that he started the collection with a strong enthusiasm to “buy Yokoyama Taikan’s work when he saves money someday” and finally expanded to 130 pieces.

また、米国の日本庭園専門雑誌『ジャーナル・オブ・ジャパニーズ・ガーデニング』が行っている日本庭園ランキングでは、初回の2003年から「16年連続日本一」という凄まじい記録を打ち出しています。
